The 400-room graduate student dormitory was planned as a result of the lack of affordable student housing in the immediate campus area. The facility was jointly planned with the Director of Resident Life, other University faculty, and the surrounding community.
The building provides a 4-person suite system of housing with kitchen and communal space in order to provide accommodations approaching apartment-style living. Both single residents and married couples will be accommodated in the residence hall. The program includes community lounge spaces sized to handle a range of receptions, events, and smaller private spaces.
The varying height of the building massing respects the site’s topography and embraces the President’s House, creating a quiet courtyard setting, yet continuing the fabric of an urban campus. The entry sequence will incorporate a dynamic double-height space and a ceremonial stair leading to the public buildings and the courtyard.
Michael Winstanley AIA AICP was the Design Principal for this project during his tenure as Design Director at Leo A Daly.
